Grey squirrel
Squirrel populations appear to be on the increase and they are more prevalent now in residential areas. Squirrels can be a nuisance in the garden by disturbing plants and eating bird food. However, the major concern is when they enter roof spaces of buildings.
Red Squirrels are an indigenous species, and they are protected by law due to dwindling numbers. Grey Squirrels can sometimes find their way into people’s houses via attics and basement, and are more than happy to use them as nests.
Similar traps to those used for rodents are also used for squirrels; in most cases we use a Warfarin-based poison. Prior to 2008, if a pest control officer caught a grey squirrel, it could not be released back into the wild, and instead had to be humanely destroyed. The law has now changed, and it is possible to release grey squirrels back into the wild, with a special license needed.
